GRA Upset Telkom To Lift First Ever Continental Title

Telkom’s nine-year dominance in the hockey Africa Cup for Club Championships (ACCC) came to an abrupt end on Saturday 27th January after losing 0-1 to Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) in the finals played at the  Theodosia Okoh Hockey Stadium in Accra, Ghana.

The loss is Telkom’s first in almost 10 years and has denied them a record tenth continental trophy. On their part, GRA’s win on home soil is a perfect revenge on Telkom who also trounced them in their backyardlast year.

The match was closely contested from the first minute as both sides displayed high quality hockey in a bid to shut down the opponents.

After 58 minutes of intense battles, Roberta Sarfoa Owusu easily tapped home the only goal of the match that elicited wild cheers from the home fans. The two remaining minutes were not sufficient for Telkom to find an equalizer, with the match ending 1-0 in favor of the hosts.

The narrow victory secures GRA their first ever continental title since making their debut back in 2012.

The Ghanaians have been trying hard but were always heart broken by Telkom, being eliminated by the latter three times in the semifinals and twice in the finals.

Road to the finals

Ghana Revenue Authority kick started their campaign with a 4-0 Win over Strathmore University Scorpions before humiliating Nigeria’s Yobe Desert Queens 8-0. They then suffered their first and only loss of the tourney in the hands of Telkom on 24th January, the Kenyans edging them 1-0 to go top of the table. GRA however redeemed themselves with a barren draw against Kada Queens to settle for second spot overall.

Telkom meanwhile qualified for the finals with an unbeaten record following three wins and one draw. The Kenyan Champions first thumped Yobe Desert Queens 5-0 before seeing off country mates Strathmore University 1-0. A 1-0 win over eventual winners GRA and a 1-1 draw against Ghana Police followed thereafter.
