Kenya to hold Maiden Olympic Day Celebrations

On 23 June the world celebrates Olympic Day – an annual occasion which is much more than just a sports event. It is a day for the world to get active, learn about Olympic values and discover new sports.

Last year, FIH reached out to National Associations and Continental Federations in a bid to synchronize the Olympic day activities for Hockey across the world. The efforts yielded massive global activity with a total of 11 African countries participating, namely: Botswana, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Morocco, Namibia, Sierra Leone, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe.

Based on the three Olympic pillars move, learn and discover, The Nairobi Hockey Association (NHA) in conjunction with Kenya Hockey Union (KHU) has organized a two day event to celebrate Kenya’s Hockey Olympians. This will be the maiden edition for Kenya. Kenya Hockey (Men) featured in three Olympics editions in 1972, 1984 and 1988.

The Olympic day is meant encourage people of all ages, gender, social background and sporting ability to participate in mass sporting activities. It is an opportunity for young people to learn from the “Masters” through training clinics. And also a golden chance for the aging to recap their youthful selves, share their memories and demonstrate just what they were made of in their hay days.

“Learn”

The Olympic day is a platform for the young people to learn and appreciate patriotism and other national values. It also brings together individuals and corporate with the aim of supporting the various activities being undertaken by the NHA and the KHU such as the development teams.

“Discover”

The weekend is an opportunity for parents to explore the various talents and abilities of their children. The following activities will be undertaken:

  • Olympic Flash Mob
  • Under 10 and Youth Development Clinics
  • Exhibition Match between an NHA select side and the Masters
