Sharks Swallow Warriors

Green Sharks returned to winning ways after a disappointing 1-2 loss to United States International University (USIU-A) in the mid-week clash played on Wednesday 1st November. Prior to this encounter, Green Sharks had lost a match against minnows Kenyatta University and struggled to salvage a draw against bottom placed Technical University of Kenya (TUK). Green Sharks came from a goal down to beat former champions Butali Warriors 3-1 in their Kenya Hockey Union league men’s Premier league match played at the City Park stadium.

Frank Wanangwe capitalized on a defensive blunder from ‘Sharks’ and collected a loose ball outside their offensive area to put ‘Warriors’ in the lead in the fifth minute through a magical back hand finish that caught Green Sharks shot stopper Alexander Muge unawares.

Sharks responded with great oomph in the second quarter. Their striking duo of Chris Muchwanju and Chris Wokila ensured much of the action remained in the Warriors half. Muchwanju would have leveled the match in the 18th minute but his well-choreographed effort hit the side bar to the dismay of the huge crowd that turned up for the match. Muchwanju was however, rewarded in the 42nd minute when Osiche collected the ball from a faulty sixteen yard start from the Warriors and drove to the baseline before cutting in a beautiful pass to Muchwanju who buried into the net with a well-executed goal past goal keeper  Pius Ratori.

Wokila doubles up

Wokila collected a Leon Magomere through pass, and set up quick one two passes with Muchwanju who placed the final pass to Wokila to burry past Ratori to put Sharks ahead.

Warriors responded with a vicious attack when veteran striker Zack “Maestro”Aura took matters into his own hands and sliced through the Sharks midfield from the centre line in a sheer show of experience and class reminiscent of his golden days at the Defunct Kenya Armed Forces Hockey. He was however fouled on the base line and earned a short corner that Warriors failed to convert.

The match seemed to go either way in the fourth quarter with a balanced attack on both ends of the pitch. However, Wokila collected a spillover from Kenyan international Constant Wakhura in the 59th minute and side stepped Ratori to complete his brace.

The match would have ended with a better score line for the Sharks who hit the side bar twice in the game. But if the results of their previous four matches are anything to go by- probably-it is true “the shark only swims in deep waters”

Desire to win

After the match, Green Sharks midfielder Victor Osiche commented saying the team had a desire to win after their bad run in the last two matches. “The team was driven by a deep desire to win yesterday’s match against a tougher opponent. Hitting the post twice made us want to score even more than before. We did exactly that,” said Osiche.
