Week 12 Preview

After a one-week break that paved way for the annual Nakuru Open Tournament held on Saturday July 7 and Sunday July 8, the Kenya Hockey Union (KHU) leagues resume this weekend and a total of twelve fixtures across four different leagues are scheduled to go down.

Will USIU redo Nakuru Tournament’s performance?
USIU-A (Men) go into the weekend hungry for points in two of the fixtures they are scheduled to play. The team has so far posted substandard results which have left them tenth overall, with only seven points to show from a similar number of games. The team has lost four of their last six fixtures, with the latest being a narrow 2-1 defeat to defending champions and current leaders Kenya Police.

They will however draw motivation from the just concluded Nakuru Open Tournament where they were crowned winners of the two-day event following a 2-0 win over Strathmore Gladiators on Sunday July 8, 2018.

Getting USIU’s weekend underway will be a clash against KCA University on Saturday July 14 at the City Park Stadium from 2pm where the Tom Olal coached side will be on the hunt for a third straight victory over their fellow learners. KCA have also not been on a good run, with only one win in their last seven league games.

USIU then face a tricky test a day later when they are set to play Wazalendo at the same venue from 3pm. Wazalendo are unbeaten in their last seven matches, boasting of six wins and one draw which have propelled them to third place in the league standings.

KCA also have two fixtures this weekend and will face Sikh Union on Sunday evening.

Butali eye return to winning ways
Another side eager for triumph this weekend is Butali Warriors, who are plotting a return to winning ways when they visit Nakuru SC on Saturday. After a stellar start to the season, the sugar millers saw their seven-game winning streak end in the hands of Kenya Police who silenced them 3-0.

A win against Nakuru will see them reduce the gap between them and Police to three points. The currently have 21 points compared to Police’s 27.

In the other Men’s Premier League encounter, Greensharks face Strathmore on Sunday at the City Park Stadium from 1pm.

Scorpions out to decelerate Telkom
It will also be an important weekend for Strathmore Scorpions who are pursuing top spot in the Women’s Premier League table.

They play two games which when won will take them to the summit of the table. On Saturday noon, they face a struggling Vikings side at the City Park Stadium before tackling their biggest opponents Telkom a day later at the same venue.

Vikings are yet to record a win this season and sit bottom of the log with a point following four losses and one draw. Telkom on the other hand will be a very tough side to beat as they overcame Scorpions both home and away last season. Telkom currently occupy the top position with 15 points from five matches while Strathmore are second with 12 points from four games.
